The battery-backup system is where the SS20-BB separates itself from a plain solar aerator. Standard solar aeration stops the moment the sun sets, and the pond's dissolved oxygen levels drift back down through the night. The SS20-BB's two 12 V AGM batteries store daytime solar charge and run the DC compressor straight through until dawn - up to a full 24 hours of continuous circulation even in low-light stretches or overcast weather. That means the pond gets nighttime aeration when fish need it most, not just during peak daylight.

Requirements & What to Know Before You Buy
- Pond Size: 2-diffuser kit up to 1 acre, 4-diffuser kit up to 2 acres. Larger ponds need multiple systems or step up to Airmax's grid-tied PondSeries line.
- Pond Depth: the SS20-BB is a full-depth aerator. Diffusers sit at the deepest point of the pond. Rated to standard PondSeries depth ranges (6 to 15+ ft).
- Solar Panel Placement: two American-made monocrystalline panels mount on the pre-assembled EasyMount rig. Site them with unobstructed south-facing sky. Panels can be up to 1/4 mile from the pond - useful when the best sun exposure isn't right at the water's edge.
- Mounting Poles (Not Included): EasyMount requires two 2.5-inch OD Schedule 40 galvanized steel poles, 10 ft minimum length. Source locally.
- Cabinet Location: powder-coated aluminum lockable cabinet sits on the shore or wherever the batteries are convenient to service. Elevated base handles occasional standing water. Above the normal high-water mark.
- Airline Sizing: 5/8-inch weighted airline. 2-diffuser kit ships with 200 ft (or no airline); 4-diffuser kit ships with 400 ft (or no airline). Measure from cabinet location to each diffuser drop point through any conduit runs and add 5-10 ft of slack per line.
- Battery Life: AGM batteries are sealed maintenance-free lead-acid, rated for 5+ years of daily cycling in typical outdoor climates. Replace when runtime noticeably drops off - a straightforward two-battery swap.
- Winter Operation: the SS20-BB is designed for continuous year-round operation, including winter. Solar production drops in short winter days but the battery backup smooths through low-light stretches. Continuous circulation keeps an open hole in the ice for gas exchange.
- Cabinet Access: plan for 3 ft of clearance around the cabinet for lid opening and battery access. Cabinet is heavy - two-person lift when repositioning.
- MPPT Smart Controller: the built-in controller supports Bluetooth. Airmax's mobile app shows runtime, charge state, voltage, and amperage in real time.
