How does a pond de-icer work?

A submersible propeller pulls warmer water from deeper in the pond (water below the surface stays around 39F even when the surface freezes) and pushes it upward. The warmer current melts a hole in the ice and keeps that hole open all winter.

A de-icer is not a pond heater: instead of burning watts on a heating element, it circulates the pond’s own warmer bottom water. That makes it far cheaper to run than a floating pond heater or koi pond heater for keeping ice open.

The unit runs continuously through freeze-up, hard winter, and thaw. Most homeowners plug it in before first freeze and leave it running until ice-out in spring.

What size de-icer do I need?
